4 Reasons to Purge While You Pack
When the time comes to pack before a big move, you may be surprised by how much junk you have hidden in your cabinets, closets, and garage. There’s no better time to do a full sweep of your possessions and get rid of the things that you no longer need than when the moving boxes come out. You’ll be saying “goodbye” to clutter, but gaining something better – a fresh start. Here’s how to purge while you pack:
Save Time and Money
Getting rid of things you don’t use anymore is an economical decision because less stuff means less moving costs. Recycling, donating, or selling excess belongings will require fewer packing supplies (like paper, tape, and boxes), fewer people to move those belongings, and even a smaller truck to transport it all. As an added bonus, selling what you don’t need on resale sites or at a garage sale can put unexpected money in your pocket. Either way, downsizing means more cash for you.
You Don’t Need It
When sorting through your things to pack, ask yourself when was the last time you used or wore an item. If it’s been a while or you can’t remember, ask yourself when is the next time you will realistically use or wear it. If you aren’t sure, it’s time to let it go. There’s no sense in moving an item from the back of one cabinet to the back of a new one, never to be used again.
It’s Charitable
Just because you no longer need something, however, doesn’t mean that others won’t. Clothes, tools, books, and even furniture that you once loved can have a second life with someone who would be happy to have them. Plus, it feels good to give things away; trust us.
Give Yourself a Fresh Start
Imagine arriving at your new home, unpacking, and only putting away items that you use and enjoy. There would be no need to find places for junk that takes up space, but doesn’t serve you well. Letting go of unnecessary belongings before you move gives you a fresh start in your new home with less clutter, and less time unpacking. That’s a beautiful thing.
When sorting through your possessions and deciding which items to pack and which to let go, try to be honest. Have a friend or family member there to help and hold you accountable, especially if you tend to keep everything you’ve ever owned. It make be tough at first, but once you start getting rid of things you don’t need, you might surprise yourself with just how much you’re willing to part with and how good you feel to purge while you pack when it’s done.
